Boot Camp – be careful soldier !!

Boot Camp

Apple has released a beta of it’s Boot Camp technology, part of the next major release of OS X Leopard, it allows Intel mac users to dual boot either to OS X or Windows XP SP2.

A useful tool, to those needing both systems, although rebooting systems will be a pain for the one windows app you may need to run on occasions.

Loved this advice from the FAQ…

Word to the Wise
Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.

So Apple have finally admitted defeat, and are going mainstream. The Mac is a great product, but the ‘lifestyle’ market is only so big. The give away is that Bootcamp is to be bundled in the new operating system, rather than released as a stand alone product. So welcome to the world of worms and viruses, of mailers and trojans. But also welcome to a truly flexible bit of hardware, where you now can run almost any software you like off the shelf. Now I’d like to see a Mac Pen Tablet device, free of the MS architectural constraints.

“So Apple have finally admitted defeat’ – Defeat? far from it, Apple have given the consumer an EVEN wider choice. Slick GUI versions of Linux such as Fedora already support the existing Apple platform, talk about spoilt for choice!

My guess is that if an Intel-based OS X user had to revert to XP it would probably only be out of necessity. Personally I find XP awkward and clunky by comparison but maybe I just like stuff that’s cool and easy to use…(zzzz)

What I can’t figure out is why GIS software for the mac is so thin on the ground. After all, Microsoft makes a HUGE bucket of money out of selling Microsoft Office for the mac and report it to be one of the most profitable areas of their business. Maybe this will soon change with Intel dual core being on both platforms and Universal binaries etc.?

Hey.. I jut read you can now buy a 64GB USB pen drive… wow.. give it ten years maybe and perhaps the whole Internet will be available on a computer magazine cover disk…
